The rules of thumb we use

A backyard Fourth of July isn't a plated dinner — guests nibble from noon to fireworks. These are the per-guest ratios seasoned hosts plan around:

  • 2.3 burgers per guest
  • 1.15 hot dogs per guest
  • 1 bun each, matched to burgers and dogs
  • ¼ lb potato salad & ¼ lb watermelon per guest
  • 1–2 sides served family-style

We always round up — running out is the one thing you can't fix mid-party. Leftovers freeze.

BBQ calculator FAQ

How many burgers per person for a BBQ?

Plan for about 2 burgers per adult. On the 4th of July people graze all afternoon, so it's normal to serve more per head than at a sit-down meal. Our calculator uses ~2.3 patties per guest and rounds up.

How many hot dogs per person?

Roughly 1 to 1.5 hot dogs per person. We use ~1.15 per guest so you have a mix of burgers and dogs without huge leftovers.

How much meat do I need for 20 / 50 / 100 people?

For 20 guests: ~46 burgers and 23 hot dogs. For 50: ~115 burgers and 58 dogs. For 100: ~230 burgers and 115 dogs. Enter your exact number above for the full list including buns, cheese and sides.
